How it works

Three steel parts, and one of them is the filter

A fountain is priced twice: once at checkout, and again for whatever it consumes. What sits between the pump and the pet decides which of those two numbers is larger.

The screen is steel

A perforated stainless screen sits flat in the bowl and the falling stream passes through it. It lifts out in one piece, rinses under a tap, and goes back in.

The bowl is 316

Bowl, top plate and screen are 316 stainless steel. It is a more corrosion-resistant alloy than the 304 used elsewhere, and the grade is printed here rather than left as "stainless".

The box is the whole system

Everything it runs on ships with it. A spare pump is sold separately for the day the original wears out, and that is the only part on this product with a replacement price.

Why choose it

Why choose the Steelbrook

The three steel parts separated in a stack against a white background

The filter is a part, not a purchase

Three steel pieces come out of the box: the bowl with its spout, the pump, and the perforated screen. The screen is the filter, and it is washed and put back.

Two hands rinsing the perforated steel screen under a running kitchen tap

It cleans under a tap

Lift the screen out, hold it under the kitchen tap until the water runs through clear, and drop it back in. The bowl rinses beside it.

The grade is on the page

We read 146 shelf listings across two searches. Two said 304. None said 316. The rest said "stainless" and stopped there. Publishing the grade is the minimum a buyer should be able to check.

Two cats drinking from the same steel fountain at the same time

Room for a second animal

The 108 oz bowl is wide enough that two pets can drink at the same time, one on each side of the spout. The 135 oz size holds more between refills.

Twelve months, one number

The competitors on our comparison publish their own refill prices. Added across a year they run from $213 to $585. This one runs to $189.90 and stops.

The sticker is not the price.

Washable steel screen, carbon cartridge, cartridge on a schedule

Each route works, and a cartridge is a perfectly ordinary way to build a fountain. They differ in what happens after the first payment — and that is a published number, not an opinion.

The three steel parts separated: perforated screen, pump, and bowl with its spout

Plain terms

The three things to know before you order

A fountain is not a self-cleaning object. The bowl and the reservoir still need washing by hand on a regular basis, exactly as a bowl does, and the screen only handles what passes through it. Nothing here cleans itself, and we are not going to describe rinsing a screen as anything more than rinsing a screen.

Some animals ignore a fountain. A cat that has decided the kitchen tap is the correct source of water may simply keep going to the kitchen tap, and no product page — ours included — can tell you in advance which kind of animal you have. That answer arrives in the first fortnight at home, which is why the return window matters more than any argument on this page.

The pump is a wear part. It is a small motor sitting in water, and on every fountain ever built, ours included, it eventually stops. Rhykin publishes a replacement at $15.00 and Pawira at $43.00. We publish ours rather than leave it out of the arithmetic and let you discover it later.

Questions & answers

Do I have to buy filters?

No. The filter on this fountain is a perforated stainless screen: you lift it out, rinse it under the tap until the water runs through clear, and put it back. There is no cartridge, no supply pack and no reorder. That is the difference the comparison page is built on.

How do I clean it?

Lift the screen out with the spout, rinse it under a tap, and rinse the bowl beside it. Do it on whatever schedule you would clean a water bowl. A person does this — nothing here cleans itself, and the reservoir needs a proper wash regularly whatever the filter is made of.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

They are different alloys. 316 contains molybdenum, which makes it more resistant to corrosion than 304. That is a fact about the metal, not a claim about your pet. Most fountain listings publish neither number and simply say "stainless" — of 66 shelf titles we read, two said 304 and none said 316.

Which size do I need?

The 108 oz is the standard and is wide enough for two animals to drink at once. The 135 oz holds more between refills, which matters if you are out for long days or have three or more pets. Both are the same bowl design; the larger one simply holds more.

What if my cat will not use it?

Some cats ignore a fountain and go back to the tap or the bowl, and no listing can tell you which kind you have. Send it back within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the product price. That window exists precisely because this question cannot be answered before the thing is on your floor.

Does the pump ever need replacing?

Yes, on every fountain, including this one. It is a small motor sitting in water. A replacement is sold separately and listed with a price, so the cost is visible before you buy rather than after. Rhykin publishes theirs at $15.00 and Pawira at $43.00 — the part is normal, hiding the price is what is not.

I can find a filterless fountain for about $44. Why is this one more?

You can, and we would rather say it here than let you find out afterwards. We read 80 listings for filterless stainless fountains: the median was $44 and 28 of them put no-filter or wastewater separation straight in the title. Two things separate them from this one, and both are checkable in a second. None of those 80 published a steel grade, and none of the four sellers on our comparison publishes a warranty term. If neither of those matters to you, the $44 shelf does the same job, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Will it make my pet drink more?

We have not measured that and we are not going to say it. What we measured is what twelve months costs, from prices each seller publishes on their own store, and that is the only thing this page ranks on.
