Where the map shows a strong signal, the FCC's own guidance is that a simple indoor antenna may be sufficient; where it shows moderate, that same guidance puts a high quality indoor antenna and an outdoor antenna in the same sentence. That is the call the map lets you make before you spend anything. Why the number on the box is not a measurement
The panels making these claims are the same shape as each other, with the same kind of coax and the same kind of in-line amplifier. Look at what they claim.
The brands that publish a frequency range and an antenna gain figure claim 35 to 60 miles. The brands that publish neither claim 50 to 5,000 and up. Middle of the first group: 50 miles. Middle of the second: 980.
Now set a third number beside those. The FCC publishes the predicted service area of every full-power television station in the country. In the agency's file dated August 12, 2026 — 1,032 stations — the median station's farthest predicted reach is 63 miles, and the single farthest anywhere in the United States is 96.9. Both of those already assume an outdoor antenna 30 feet off the ground, which no indoor panel is.
So the brands that publish a spec sheet promise less than the FCC predicts. The brands that publish nothing promise fifteen times more.
The number that decides this purchase is not printed on a box. It is the one printed next to your own address.
What decides whether it works in your house
Three things, in this order.
1. What reaches your address. An antenna receives what is already being broadcast nearby. It cannot add a station that is not there, and no amount of amplifier changes that. The map tells you what is there before you spend anything.
2. Where you put it. This is the variable people underestimate. If you have owned an antenna before, you know the routine — get up in the middle of a show, nudge the panel an inch, sit back down, lose the channel again an hour later. The FCC's own guidance is that reception “can often be improved just by changing the location of your current antenna, even as little as a few inches.” CastaWave sticks to a wall or a window with the pads in the box, and it comes off and moves again. 3. How far you are from the towers. The amplifier is where this category gets it backwards. An amplifier does not reach further. It sits after the antenna and after the cable, so all it can work with is the signal the antenna already caught — it buys margin against noise, not distance. Close to a tower it can cost you channels you already had, which is why the FCC tells consumers near a broadcast tower to remove the amplifier or fit an attenuator. Where the signal is weak, that margin is what a tuner needs to lock. The map is what tells you which case you are in.
A flat panel is a UHF antenna
The reason is arithmetic anyone can redo. Half a wavelength at 470 MHz is about 12 inches; at 608 MHz it is about 9. That is the size range of a panel like this one, and it is why panels work on channels 14 through 36, where the large majority of US stations sit.
Channel 2 is a different animal. Half a wavelength there is 104 inches — over eight feet of metal — and at the top of channel 6 it is still more than five feet. No flat panel carries an element that size. Not this one, not any brand's. If your address needs channels 2 through 6, you need a large outdoor antenna, and the map will show you that before you order.
Channels 7 through 13 sit in between, and they are the weak spot of the whole panel format: the two brands in this category that publish an antenna gain figure print roughly half as much there as they do for channels 14 through 36. What this antenna does not do
- It does not carry cable channels. ESPN, HBO, CNN and the rest are not broadcast over the air. The FTC says it in as many words: an over-the-air antenna will not get you free premium channels.
- It does not beat walls or height. The FCC's coverage model assumes an antenna 30 feet up and outdoors. A panel on your living room wall is below that by definition, and brick, foil-backed insulation and metalized window glass all take a bite on the way in.
- It does not receive channels 2 through 6. No indoor flat panel does, of any brand. That band needs a large outdoor antenna.
- There is no faint picture from far away. Digital reception is either there or it is not — the FCC calls it the cliff effect, and the picture stays perfect until the signal drops under the threshold, then it is gone. There is no middle ground here.
- An outdoor antenna receives better than any indoor one, and for a weak-signal address the FCC recommends exactly that. CastaWave is the indoor answer, for the addresses the map already shows as strong or moderate.
Who this is for
- You rent, or the building will not let you fix anything outside, and an indoor panel is the option that is left.

- A second TV — bedroom, kitchen, spare room — where the one free outlet is behind the dresser. The amplifier draws its power from the USB port on the television, so it does not take a wall socket.

Setting it up
- Stick the panel to a window or a wall with the pads in the box.
- Screw the coax into the antenna jack on the back of the TV.
- Plug the amplifier's USB lead into a USB port on the TV, or into a phone charger.
- Run the channel scan in your TV menu. Then move the panel, and scan again.
No app, no account, no internet connection. Televisions sold in the US have had the tuner built in and a coax socket on the back for many years now. A set old enough to be without one needs a converter box.

Questions
Will an indoor TV antenna work in my area?
Nobody can answer that without your address, and anyone who tries is guessing. The FCC map answers it station by station, before you spend anything.
What channels will I get?
Whatever is broadcast near you. No antenna adds a station that is not already on the air, and the map lists the ones that are.
Do I need an amplified TV antenna?
It helps when the signal is weak and it can hurt when the signal is strong, because an amplifier lifts interference along with the broadcast. Distance to the towers decides it — the map shows you the distance.
Does this antenna work without wifi?
Yes. There is no internet, no app and no account anywhere in this. The signal arrives through the air.
Will it work in an apartment?
It depends on your floor, your window and what the walls are made of. What changes the result most is position, not model — and the map tells you which direction the towers are in, so you know which window to try first.
Will it pick up ESPN?
No. Cable channels are not broadcast over the air, and no antenna of any kind receives them.
